Background to the Novel--
In preparation to read the text, you must understand some background information to avoid confusion while reading. Complete the activities below--when necessary, use your own paper for notes. Remember, this text was published in 1902 and takes place during 1889. Society works differently during this time in England compared to what we know in present day.
Use the resources on this page to complete the following activities:
1. Click the link button above and explore the biography website of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Write 15 facts in your notes that you feel are most important to know about him. Look especially for his influence as a writer.
2. Sherlock Holmes, the greatest detective in literary history, is our main character. Click the link button below and explore the Wikipedia information about him--as a character. Write 10 facts in your notes that you feel are most important to understanding him as a character.
3. Research the Black Dog (Black Shuck and the Whisht Hounds). Click the link button below. Take notes on the legends of demon hounds by examining their behavior, habitat, features, abilities, and weaknesses (all 5 areas). The text draws strongly on these legends and folklore to bring in the element of the supernatural.
4. Explore the wikipedia information about Dartmoor, which relates to the setting. Click the link button below. Write at least 3 facts from each of the following sections: Bogs and Myths/Literature. Also, make sure you define "moor" and "bog."
5. Preview vocabulary words from the novel through the quizlets below. Spend time reviewing the words and playing the review games. Take a "test" when you feel confident. Continue to review until you make an 85 or higher on each "test."
